The challenge? Look up. Take a moment to check out what’s going on above you. I was excited. For the last few weeks I’ve been watching a couple of eagles hang out on power poles near where we live. The poles, conveniently, sit right above a slough and, apparently, serve as primo hunting perches. I suspect they have a nest somewhere in the vicinity.
I’ve been intending to stop and photograph them, but they’re most often out in the morning when I’m on my way to work. And I’m usually running that thin line between on time and late. This morning I grabbed my camera as I headed out the door to yoga. I was rewarded for the effort.
I was exhilarated as I hopped back in the car and headed on down the road. I started thinking about words commonly used to describe eagles: bold, brave, majestic, loyal, faithful, strong, proud. In a moment of poignancy I considered how those same words could be used to describe the five police offers who lost their lives in Dallas this week. Proud…brave….strong. This is a memorial in their honor.

Welcome to Tales from the Upper Left! I’m an Oregonian by birth, and a Washingtonian (upper left...get it?) by choice. I share my life with a husband named Jonathan and a cat named Colby Jack (he’s orange...like cheese). I dabble in photography (passionate hobbyist), hike when the opportunity arises, drink wine whenever the mood strikes me and travel not often enough. Predictable Washington blog? Nah. I promise! Perfect for this week’s challenge and for this week’s events. Such a sad week. Even the proud eagle bows his head in shame and prayer.
