I love trillium. Actually, I love all flowers stumbled across during hikes. So, imagine my surprise (and delight) when I discovered a very small patch (read: one plant) in the “great beyond” the other evening.
The “great beyond” is what I refer to the area beyond our yard. The Homestead sits on 2 1/2 acres of land. Sometimes it feels like enough, other times not nearly enough. Most of it is wooded. A snarl of ferns and blackberry bushes. Lots of alder. Enough maple to create a mess in the yard every fall when they shake their leaves off. It’s a lovely piece of property. Except for the swamp. There’s always something, yes?
We sit on clay. Bummer for us. Poor drainage. And, because of all of the lovely trees, we don’t get a ton of sunlight. Thus, we grow moss amazingly well. And the yard is a spongy, sloppy mess for much of the year. Sigh. Should have known this beautiful home and beautiful property was too good to be true.
Anyways, I don’t even remember what I was doing the other evening. Wandering about the yard. Camera in hand. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a whisper of white. I turned. I looked. I gasped. Trillium!!!! I’ve never seen trillium on our property! Ever! That doesn’t mean it hasn’t been there. I’ve just not seen it.
So, in honor of all that is beautiful, and spring….and trillium….

What a luxury to have all that space (squishy though it may be)! It would be a lark trolling around for photo opportunities in my very own woods.
It’s really nice. We have 2 1/4 acres and sometimes it doesn’t feel like enough. Sure is nice sitting on the couch in the family room and looking out at maples, ferns and alders. No complaints!
