Yesterday evening the husband and I went to Burfoot Park after work for a picnic. I picked up sandwiches from our favorite local shop on my way home. We threw some water and a bottle of wine into the cooler and off we went. I know I keep saying this, but the weather around here has truly been extraordinary. At 6 pm last night I was in shorts and a tank top. We were at the park until 8:30 and I remained comfortable the entire time. In fact, when we went down to walk along the beach it was on the “too warm” side.
Rather than using a metal picnic table we gave our Table in a Bag a whirl. The table, combined with our stadium chairs, worked like a dream. We are set for the concert that we’ll be attending at Chateau Ste. Michelle in a few weeks. I had raided the paper products cupboard at home, which resulted in a festive looking set-up.
We sat back and sipped our wine, a very nice rose called Goats Do Roam. The husband is not certain what he thinks about my foray into the world of roses this summer. We’re normally red drinkers, though we do enjoy a chilled riesling, vouvray or sauvignon blanc in the summer. But roses are just so…pretty. So, I’ve been test-running a few this summer. Still not sure I’ve entirely got my lips around them, but they’re growing on me.
We also enjoyed a virtually empty park:
Except for Mia:
As we were finishing our sandwiches this dog moseys up. I had thrown a few pieces of bread into the grass, trying to entice a robin to come over so I could take its picture. The bird didn’t go for it, but the dog enjoyed the bread. We continued talking, but started looking towards the trail to the water. She had come up that way and was wet, so we were expecting her people to be right behind her. No people. Worrisome. I finally looked at her tag and it said her name was Mia. It also announced that if she was at Burfoot Park or Boston Harbor to not worry, she would go home on her own. Well. Apparently Mia walks herself. As a few other picnickers arrived she went to greet (and to see if they might have something better than we did. She seems picky…she wouldn’t eat the Baked Cheetos I offered her). We look forward to visiting with Mia more this summer.
After a very leisurely dinner we headed for the beach. We were glad that we enjoyed our picnic under a shade tree up top, as it was reeeaaaallly warm in the sun on the beach. But, it was a beautiful evening.
Those are the Olympic Mountains in the distance. Again, we truly live in a stunning area.
We strolled along (sweating), talking and enjoying the view.
Sigh. Need I say more?
After a bit we headed back to the car. Reluctantly. We considered staying for the sunset, but we knew we were getting up early this morning to go hiking. However, we promised each other that we will go out for a sunset a few times this summer (our property sits down amongst trees…no sunsets for us).
I had laugh about Mia’s tag. Yeah, really….a dog who walks herself. What a concept. Your picnic sounds wonderful. Goats do Roam? I had that at a wine tasting once. Was a little skeptical about the name but it is not bad at all!

It was really nice. I don’t know that I’d be willing to allow my dog to wander about unaccompanied, but I can be a bit clingy when it comes to pets. Did you have the rose or something else by Goats do Roam?

I had the rose b/c that is not a wine I usually drink. I like that and Coppola’s Sofia rose. The shape of the bottle is beautiful!

I’ll have to look for Coppola’s. Does it have more going for it than an attractively shaped bottle? 🙂

Ha! Yes. It is a very tasty wine, but then I like all of Coppola’s wines.

I will look for it when I go to the store today!
